How To Remove Keyboard Keycaps

The method for removing keycaps depends on the keyboard type. Mechanical keyboards can be removed directly using a keycap puller or by hand, while laptop and membrane keyboards, due to their delicate structure, require careful handling or the use of a thin tool to pry them off.

Tool Selection and Use: It is recommended to use a dedicated wire or plastic clip-on keycap puller. Insert the tool onto both sides of the keycap and apply upward pressure alternately to avoid uneven force that could damage the switches.

Wire Keycap Puller: Suitable for most standard keycaps, easy to use and unlikely to scratch the keycap surface.

Plastic Keycap Puller: The clip design better protects the keycaps and is suitable for keycaps with special clip designs.

Hand Removal Technique: If no tools are available, you can pinch the sides of the keycap with your fingers and gently pull it out vertically upwards. Avoid shaking it from side to side or using brute force. For keys without a keycap puller, you can try gently prying up the corner of the keycap with a paperclip or the edge of a credit card at a 45-degree angle, slowly lifting it upwards.

Special handling for large keys: Large keys such as the spacebar and enter key usually have stabilizer bars or stabilizers underneath. When disassembling, observe the structure first, lifting from both sides or removing the surrounding smaller keys first.

Some large keys have internal wire connections. Applying too much force may pull out the connecting parts together. Use gentle force and lift upwards with the natural flow.
