How To Clean Keyboard Keycaps

The core steps for cleaning keyboard keycaps are: Disassemble the keycaps after disconnecting the power, soak them in warm water with a neutral detergent, and clean them with a soft brush. After thoroughly drying, reassemble them according to the photos.

Preparation and Safe Disassembly: Always disconnect the keyboard power before cleaning (unplug the USB cable or remove the battery). Use a keycap puller to remove the keycaps vertically upwards. Pay attention to the stabilizer bar structure for larger keys such as the spacebar and Shift key. It is recommended to take a picture of the entire keyboard with your phone before disassembly for accurate reassembly.

Soaking and Brushing Keycaps: Place the removed keycaps in warm water (35-40℃) with a small amount of neutral detergent (approximately 1:100 concentration) and soak for 15-30 minutes. Then, gently brush the surface and grooves of the keycaps with a soft-bristled toothbrush or soft cloth. For stubborn stains, use cotton swabs for additional cleaning.

Rinsing and Thorough Drying: Rinse the keycaps thoroughly with running water, ensuring no detergent residue remains. Lay the keycaps flat in a well-ventilated area to air dry naturally, or use a cool-air hairdryer to assist. Ensure they are completely dry (usually requiring at least 6 hours) before reinstalling to prevent residual moisture from causing short circuits or oxidation of the switches.

Keyboard Cleaning and Keycap Reinstallation: After removing the keycaps, use a can of compressed air to blow away dust from the keyboard crevices, or use a soft-bristled brush or cotton swab dipped in a small amount of isopropyl alcohol (below 70% concentration) to clean around the switches. Once the keycaps are completely dry, align each keycap with the switch and press it vertically into place, referring to the previously taken photos.
